Communication

Let's visualize a scenario in which a group of extraterrestrial beings, in a spaceship, lands on Earth. They cannot speak our language and we cannot interpret each other's body language. How can we communicate with them, to make them aware of our intelligence (intelligence being a general term here)? What message would we give to them?

I would totally try to use music as a message. I mean, who can't relate to music? What song though, I must muse on, because you would have to be sure you choose the right one, otherwise, it wouldn't be pretty. Think heavy metal. Could be taken as aggressive, so you want something a bit more calming.

I like the music idea, Ashley. My teacher suggested demonstrating the laws of science, because they have to know something about energy and the laws of motion to travel through space.

The science thing would work, but I mean, come on. Who doesn't like music? Plus, music involves math...

Right, and so does science. And science has music too--sound waves! I do love music, but what if these creatures can't detect sound waves, or what if the wrong frequency would kill them? Maybe that's a little overanalyzing, but is there really a universal language?

I think before any kind of attempt should be made at communication some sort of scan should be performed to figure out exactly what material they're made of. If we're not careful we might accidentally kill an entire race! In the meantime I would try to get some form of visual entertainment going for them if they have eyes that function the same as ours...so many variables to account for! ^_^
